MS in Health Sciences Physician Assistant Studies (PA) Program
Not all programs are offered at our Off-Campus Instructional Sites. The South University Savannah Master of Science in Physician Assistant program offers fundamental medical concepts and theories, provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to function with physician supervision, as medical professionals who will serve as valued members of the health care team.
Physician assistants perform medical functions that include, but are not limited to, evaluation, monitoring, diagnostics, therapeutics, counseling, and referral. The scope of the practice varies according to state laws, the medical setting, and the training of the physician assistant.

Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program’s ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class cohort of students.
Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class. It is the second oldest PA program in the nation and was established only two years after the birth of the PA profession. The UAB PA program provides intense didactic and clinical experiences in primary care, medicine and surgery. In fact, our program is one of the few PA programs that offers both a cadaveric dissection experience to supplement our anatomy course, and a live pig lab to provide a practical, hands-on experience to strengthen the surgical component of our core curriculum.
Students in the PA program have an opportunity to study within the UAB Hospital system, which is noted to be one of the top medical centers in the U. Our students also have opportunities to complete clinical rotations in emergency medicine, primary care, trauma, critical care, and surgery, at clinical sites located within and surrounding the Birmingham area.

Human anatomy for physician assistant students takes a regional approach to the study of human anatomy. This course will involve dissection of human cadavers by the students. During the clinical year, students complete nine six-week rotations in emergency medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, primary care, surgery, pediatrics, and an elective rotation.
In addition, students complete 2 shorter 3 week rotations in long term care and psychiatry. Upon acceptance into the Physician Assistant Program, each student will be assigned a faculty member who will serve as his or her advisor. The advisor will offer counsel on issues related to requirements for program completion, the development of long-term plans of study and future professional direction, and academic standing in the program.
The Graduate Physician Assistant Program is a full-time weekday program that takes 27 months to complete.
